Produces a large showy inflorescence with 1-3 flowers growing from each corm. The flowers are 30-35 mm wide, quite variable in colour, purplish-pink or lilac, with darker veining on the tepals, a deep-yellow or orange throat and a whitish band above. Bright yellow stamens. Winter dormant.

Seldom seen in New Zealand. 30-60 cms in height. The few 1-1.5 in flowers grow in whorls on an inflorescence about 1 ft long. The name castanea, which means 'chestnut coloured', refers to the purplish-maroon flowers. Sun. Winter dormant.

To 1 metre. Wonderful display of bright, velvety red flowers from spring to autumn. The loose spikes of flared, tubular, two-lipped flowers are very fragrant and attract bees. Sun, good drainage. Winter dormant.

Another beautiful Salvia that has deepest magenta pink flowers from late spring. Deadheading prolongs the flowering time. Sun or part shade. Highly fragrant and winter dormant.
