Actaea spicata Rubra

30 seeds 2016/17. To 80 cms. Ferny look, with small white fluffy flowers in spring. In summer there follows bright red, shiny, berries (not to be eaten), held on slender green stems. Woodland or shaded garden in a cool and moist site. Winter dormant.

Clianthus puniceus
(Kakabeak). Red variety. A woody legumey shrub native to the North Island, with striking clusters of red flowers. These flowers resemble the beak of a New Zealand parrot, and the plant is also known as Parrot's Beak, Parrot's Bill and Lobster Claw. An endangered species in the wild. Widely grown as a garden plant. Grows to about 2 metre high with spreading branches producing leaf stalks up to 15 cm long bearing several pairs of small leaflets. Sun or partial shade. To one metre +. Fertile humus rich, well drained soil. Smothered in showy clusters of pure white, sweet pea-like flowers among grey-green leaves. A vigorous climber, it looks lovely scrambling over a sunny wall or through a hedge or evergreen shrub, although initially it needs to be tied into supports. No fragrance.
